Alcohol addiction treatment
– alcohol detox

Problem that arises with alcohol detox (alcohol intoxication pharmacotherapy) is that a lot of drugs interacts with alcohols and it may be dangerous for health. Notice warnings on medicaments: don't mix with alcohol, etc. However, physicians have some limited but effective methods for alcohol detox.

Alcohol detox engages two medicaments. First of them is Lorazepam, which is a benzodiazepine, have addictive properties and may cause fatal respiratory depression when overdosed with alcohol. That's why medical doses used during detox are small. Someone who's treatment is carried accurately and carefully by physician / addiction counselor is completely safe from dangerous health effects and addiction to this medicament.

Medical Lorazepam dose for alcohol detox are small, as I mentioned before. It is often 1-2 mg taken orally (medicament is available in 0.5 mg, 1.0 mg, 2.0 mg tablets; photo was prepared with use of public domain materials from U.S. Department of Justice). This is the only one medicament used if everything is all right after its ingestion. But if patient's condition becames worser second one is used – haloperidol with dose usually about 5 mg (injected right to the muscle).
