Benzylpiperazine
Benzylpiperazine (BZP) is a stimulant drug and one of new psychoactive substances, ingredient of 'party pills' increasingly popular among youth. Mechanism of action is similar to MDMA (Ecstasy) and effects are very similar to amphetamines. However, BZP is less popular because of its side effects which are much more severe. Hence, manufacturers add some supplementary chemicals to BZP tablets (e.g. vitamins) to make side effects – e.g. headaches and alcohol-like hangovers the day after use – more bearable. Benzylpiperazine is an illegal substance in some countries including U.S. (delegalized in 2002), Japan and Australia. On the other hand manufacturing, supplying and possessing of benzylpiperazine 'party pills' is still not restricted by law in most of Europe, Canada, New Zealand and others. In pure form BZP is yellowish-green liquid and as a hydrochloride salt is white powder. Sold (also through internet shops) commonly as capsules or sometimes as tablets with variety of colors and imprints (like Ecstasy tablets). On the photo below Cosmic Jet capsules from New Zealand are shown. Simple molecular structure in the middle confirms that production of BZP is rather easy for any synthetic organic chemist with average abilities. Unfortunately it makes benzylpiperazine, which possess high potential of abuse, more available both in gray market and in free market.
