GBL – gamma-butyrolactone
γ-butyrolatcone (GBL) is a simple organic molecule which is used to produce γ-hydrobutyric acid (GHB) by hydrolysis. GBL may be also used as an alternative to GHB because effects of action are similar. However, those effects remain longer, are more impetuous and onset is shorter. When ingested, GBL is to some extent metabolized in vivo in stomach into GHB (it means that GBL is a prodrug for GHB). This harmful chemical become popular when GHB supply had become restricted by law. GBL is an industrial solvent – it's colorless liquid. As a drug it's popular especially in London Gay Scene. One of the so-called 'club drugs'.
