The Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) was created by Fagerström, Hearherton, Kozlowski and published in British Journal of Addictions, 1991. It is a revised version of older one, called 'Fagerström Tolerance Questionnaire' (FTQ). Although there are only eight questions and those questions are easy results are believed to be highly reliable in all cases.
Answer the following questions:
1. How soon after you wake up do you smoke your first cigarette?
- 0 – after 30 minutes
- 1 – within 30 minutes
2. Is it hard for you to not smoke in places where it is not permitted; e.g., in a cinema or theatre, a place of worship, in an airport or airplane, hospital etc?
- 0 – no
- 1 – yes
3. Which cigarette would you most hate to give up?
- 0 – any other time of the day
- 1 – the first one in the morning
4. How many cigarettes per day do you smoke?
- 0 – less than 15
- 1 – 16 to 25
- 2 – more than 25
5. Do you smoke more frequently during the first hours after awakening than during the rest of the day?
- 0 – no
- 1 – yes
6. Do you smoke even if you are so ill that you are in bed most of the day?
- 0 – no
- 1 – yes
7. What is the level of nicotine in your usual cigarette? (check out concentration on the pack)
- 0 – less than 0.6 mg/cigarette
- 1 – between 0.6 mg to 1.0 mg/cigarette
- 2 – more than 1.0 mg/cigarette
8. Do you inhale?
- 0 – never at all
- 1 – sometimes
- 2 – always
